Winter is in full force and so is our section. We have several exciting events coming up. First we have two events related to National Engineering Week: The Dinner on February 15th and the Student Event on February 21st. See the other articles in this newsletter for more information.
Also starting in February, we are having the first of our SWE Networking Nights. These will be a monthly event and give us the opportunity to network and socialize. The first event is Thursday, Feb 28th starting at 5:30pm. The location is Old Chicago's at Woodmen and I-25. This event is open to everyone, not just SWE members. So invite anyone who you think might enjoy the event. Finally, we bid a fond farewell to Kathleen Watson. She and her family are moving to Portland, Oregon. We wish them all the best.

Engineering has been called the " invisible profession " or the " stealth profession" because most students and people in general have no clue what engineers do. This is unfortunate, because everything in society is linked to engineering. We need you and your help to inform high school girls and boys about the fields of engineering, type of work, description of job, projects you are involved in, pictures and video of work and projects. There are two upcoming opportunities to do this:
First Opportunity:
Coranado High School currently has over 200 students enrolled in their engineering programs, of which only 10% are girls. With your volunteer time, knowledge and presentations, they can increase the number of girls and minority students in our programs and educate students on the value of engineering.
Coronado High School is looking for engineers (i.e. You) to
speak to high school girls and boys about your field of engineering, type of work, job description and projects you are involved in.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact teacher Gary Hilty at (719) 328-3754 or hiltygl@d11.org with the times and dates you would be available during Feb 11 - 22.
Another Opportunity:
Colorado Springs School District 11 has asked the Society of Women Engineers – Pikes Peak Section to participate in a Career Fair scheduled on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Wasson High School, 2115 Afton Way, Colorado Springs, CO 80909 (on the north side of Constitution Avenue between N. Circle Dr. and N. Union Blvd. ).
Professionals participating in this Career Fair may display materials or handouts from their companies or organizations and are expected to answer questions asked by the 9 th , 10 th , 11 th and 12 th grade high school students. The students will be required to stop and speak to a specific number of people and record that information for their teacher.
SWE-PPS plans to have a table at this Career Fair. If you would like to volunteer to participate during the morning or afternoon of this February 27 th Career Fair, please contact Connie King at
(719) 650-2783
with your name, phone number, email address and mailing address, the timeframe during which you'd like to participate and whether you plan to be there for lunch.
For National Engineers Week this year, SWE-PPS is partnering with Agilent Technologies and Cool Science to introduce a home schooler to engineering on February 21st which is Thursday of NEW 2008.
Here are the details:
8:45 AM Check in for volunteers @ Agilent
9:00 AM Welcome and Cool Science demonstration
10:00 AM Split out by age group to workshops using Agilent After School kits
11:15 AM Pizza lunch with students, many cool handouts!
Great news - there are over 200 home schoolers registered and more volunteers are needed! Contact carole.passmore@swe.org to volunteer. We would like our SWE volunteers to help out with the Agilent After School kits, but you are welcomed to come for all or parts of the event. As Carole says, it's easy and her high school aged daughter was able to show the kits to Girl Scout troops so if she could do it, so can you.
The Region i Conference is almost here...
Each year about 250 people across Wyoming, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, and part of Illinois get together for the Region i Conference. This year the University of Colorado Boulder is proud to host this event! This conference is a great opportunity for both SWE and non-SWE members to get together and celebrate the idea of being an engineer! This year, we have over twenty speakers signed up to help us grow our leadership, professional development, technological, health, and fitness skills. But overall, these speakers will help us have fun!
