We have experienced winter already, so join your fellow women engineers for a spring fashion break for the January SWE-PPS meeting. We will not only get to see some new spring fashions at Talbots, but also learn some fashion tips. Topics will include "business casual" that still looks professional and outfits that can cover both work and evening events. There will be time for questions and shopping. Later we can choose a nearby restaurant for dinner.
Date: January 23, 2007
Time: 5:30 pm (you may arrive early to browse)
Location: Talbots in the NE corner of the Shops at the Briargate, 1925 Briargate Parkway, Suite 627.
RSVP: by 5:00 pm January 22 to Charlotte Muchow at 573-6479.
Dear SWE-PPS,
Happy 2007! I have great news to start out our year!
Last fall, students from the Air Force Academy applied to create a SWE Collegiate Interest Group (CIG).
SWE-PPS has chosen to support their application. To do so, we would like to provide them with a SWE
adviser--a member of our section who will act as a liason between our
section and their CIG, and help them learn about the SWE organization.
Please contact me if you are interested.
We are pleased that students from the pre-engineering program at
Colorado College have also expressed interest in forming a SWE CIG.
If you are interested in working with a group at CC, please contact
me.
To share Engineers Week with these excited students, SWE-PPS would
like to hold "coffeehouse discussions" about being a female engineer.
Ideally we would like to sponsor these events, tentatively titled
"Coffee, Tea and 'E'", for each of our potential CIGs. Contact me if this is a
career guidance effort you'd like to help with.
All the best,
Angela Howard
The Bridge Building program is run by Guenther Polok and Lesley Mace and will be held at the Chapel Hills Mall on Saturday January 20. This program promotes
engineering in high schools by having them build bass wood bridges, which are then tested for their strength to weight ratio. The volunteers are needed no later than
7:30 am at the Center Stage. The doors to the food court entrance will open at 6 am . Approximately 10 to 12 volunteers are needed to register to kids from local High
Schools and check their bridges for compliance with the competition regulations. The total time commitment is roughly four to four and a half hours.
If you are interested please contact Guenther Polok at 266-5212.
The Mathcounts program is coordinated by Mike Bartusek and will be held at Colorado College on Saturday February 10. This program promotes engineering in Middle
School. This math test is given to 6th, 7th and 8th graders throughout the state. Volunteers are needed to help proctor or grade the tests. Proctors are needed from
8:30 am until 11:30 and graders are needed from 9 am until 12. We will need a total of 25 to 30 volunteers.
Also we need volunteers to help with a presentation to
the kids to showcase different aspects of engineering. If your company is working on an interesting project or you know someone the kids may be interested in such as
robotics or computers please contact Mr. Bartusek.
Continental Breakfast will be provided for the volunteers and box lunches will be available for the competitors and volunteers.
Last year they were scrambling to find enough volunteers so please mark your calendars for this event. Also if you have contacts with other groups
that might help (e.g. Airforce Academy cadets or co-workers) please contact Mike Bartusek at 266-5212
The SWE Student Section at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado is hosting this year's Society of Women Engineers Region i Conference.
Region i covers the 6 state area that includes Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Missouri and
the conference is a wonderful way to network with other women engineers in a broader professional scope.
The conference is the weekend of March 2-3, 2007 and information is at: http://www.mines.edu/Stu_life/organ/swe/Regionals.htm |
