Help us celebrate and spread the word about engineering! SWE is the national society sponsor of Engineers' Week 2006 (February 19-25) and the SWE-PPS section is planning our community's annual dinner.
We are also in the process of planning an event for “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” on Thursday, February 23, 2006 inviting middle school girls to learn about engineering at activities along the Garden of the Gods corridor. Another observance idea we've discussed is coffee house get-togethers to support women pursuing math, science and engineering entitled “Coffee, Tea or ‘E'”.
If these ideas appeal to you, if you have other ideas to share, or you'd like a casual lunchtime opportunity to bond with other female engineers, please attend our E-week planning lunches—the 2nd Wednesday of each month through February 2006 at La Baguette on Chestnut and Garden of the Gods. Please contact Angela Howard at angela_howard@alum.wustl.edu for more details.
Everyone is invited to attend our joint meeting with the UCCS student section this month at the UCCS campus on Austin Bluffs Parkway.
The focus of this panel discussion will be on how to become invaluable at work. We are also looking for volunteers to sit on the panel, so if you have any good advice to share please contact Carole.
Date/Time: Tuesday, November 8, 2005, 7:30 - 8:30 pm
Place: Breckenridge room 5101, UCCS campus on Austin Bluffs
Refreshments provided by UCCS. Please contact Carole Passmore at carole_passmore@agilent.com for more information.
Each year the SWE Council of Representatives (COR) considers specific external and internal issues to give the society guidance on. This year the issue COR will be discussing is creating SWE liaisons to other engineering societies. The purpose of these liaisons would be to provide outreach to members of other engineering societies and to grow SWE membership. Secondary purposes include increasing SWE visibility and providing additional benefits to SWE members.
Also at this week's COR meeting, the Council will be voting to update the Society's “BHAG” (big hairy audacious goal). The BHAG is the visionary statement that guides the Society's strategy for the next 5-30 years. The current BHAG is for SWE to become “the recognized authority on, and advocate for, women in engineering.” The proposed BHAG is to “transcend the W in SWE.” Each of these BHAGs have accompanying vivid descriptions that provide descriptions of what the future would look like if the BHAG is achieved.
If you are interested in reading the background materials on either of these issues, please click here to visit the COR page on the SWE website. You will have to log-in to access this page.
Please offer your input on these items to Connie King at 633-4421 or Angela Howard at
angela_howard@alum.wustl.edu who will be representing Pikes Peak section at the annual COR meeting at the SWE National Conference this week. |
