Dear SWE-PPS:
Welcome to a new year! Many thanks to the FY05 PPS officers for all their hard work last year! Pikes Peak FY06 section officers have taken office and I am very excited about the upcoming year. The section officers this year represent an exciting mix of PPS experience and new blood. I appreciate volunteers giving time from their busy schedules to serve SWE. As always, SWE is a valuable training ground for new and experienced leaders.
Mark your calendar! The newsletter contains information about our meetings each month through February. Our programs run the gamut from professional development to outreach to purely social fun. I'm sure you will enjoy the programming we've planned for the year.
I wish every SWE-PPS member could attend every one of our meetings, but I know that we all have to choose our priorities. If you are currently making your meeting priorities, please plan to attend at least the Engineers' Week Dinner on Friday, February 17th. SWE is the society sponsor for Engineers' Week nationally and SWE-PPS is planning the dinner in Colorado Springs this February so we'd appreciate strong support from our membership!
If you are interested in helping plan our Engineers' Week dinner or other activities to celebrate Engineers' Week, join our monthly lunch meetings—more information available in this newsletter. There are always other opportunities available to support SWE-PPS particularly with professional development and membership support. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact me.
SWE-PPS continues to grow and it was great to see some of you at our annual September social at Jose Muldoon's. If you haven't renewed your membership, it is so easy—you can access your membership records at www.swe.org . You can even pay your dues online!
I look forward to seeing you at our exciting programs this year!
Angela Howard
Pikes Peak Section FY06 President

Help us celebrate and spread the word about engineering! This year SWE-PPS is supporting SWE as the national society sponsor of Engineers' Week (February 19-25, 2006) by planning our community's annual dinner. We are also in the initial stages of planning an event for “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” on Thursday, February 23, 2006 inviting middle school girls to learn about engineering at activities along the Garden of the Gods corridor. Another observance idea we've discussed is coffee house get-togethers to support women pursuing math, science and engineering entitled “Coffee, Tea or ‘E'”.
If these ideas appeal to you, if you have other ideas to share, or you'd like a casual lunchtime opportunity to bond with other female engineers, please attend our planning lunches—the 2nd Wednesday of each month through February 2006 at La Baguette on Chestnut and Garden of the Gods. Please contact Angela Howard at angela_howard@alum.wustl.edu for more details.
How do you make yourself invaluable at work? Are you the go-to person for a technology; possess a special skill; know how to talk to people at another company site possibly in a different language; or are you just a person that can be counted on no matter the task?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, or thought of a few other items for the list above, then WE NEED YOU! We are looking for some Pikes Peak Section members to form a panel to present tips and stories for our UCCS Student members on how to become invaluable at work.
Being a panel member is easy and fun! You only have to speak for a few minutes to informally tell your story, and field questions from the students. Please consider this entertaining and rewarding opportunity to mentor our UCCS women engineers!
Date/Time: Tuesday, November 8, 2005, 7:30 - 8:30 pm Place: UCCS University Center, UCCS campus on Austin Bluffs
Refreshments provided by UCCS. Please contact Carole Passmore at carole_passmore@agilent.com for more information.
