Making Sense Of VoIP
The Pikes Peak Section of the Society of Women Engineers will be holding its monthly meeting on March 22, 2005 starting at 5:30 pm at the Rockrimmon Branch Library - Community Center, 832 Village Center Dr, Colorado Springs.
The topic is "Making Sense of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)" and will be presented by SWE member, Diane Howe. Please mark your calendars and feel free to invite your colleagues or anyone else interested in an overview of this technology that is here to stay.
Topic Abstract:
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology used to transmit conversations digitally over the internet. VoIP is being adopted globally and changing the landscape of telecommunications for businesses and consumers. This presentation describes VoIP and how it compares to traditional phone systems, the standards organizations promoting the technology, and what this means for you now and in the future.

From the bylaws:
1. A person who is or has been actively engaged in the profession of engineering is
eligible to become a senior member, if one of the following criteria is met at the
time of application for admission or advancement:
a. Holds a baccalaureate or advanced degree in engineering, engineering
technology, or a science related to engineering and has at least six years of
progressively significant engineering experience; or
b. Has at least eleven years of progressively significant engineering experience,
indicating engineering competency and achievement.
2. Any member who has received the SWE Achievement Award shall be
automatically made a senior member, except that a fellow of the Society shall
retain the fellow grade.
Every year, our section collects donations from generous, local companies, facilates the application process, and awards college scholarships to students with the donated funds. Applications are now available at http://www.swe-pps.org/scholarship.
The Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair is Saturday, March 12th at UCCS. Each year, our section awards a middle school student and a high school student with awards for best engineering project. If you wish to be a judge on behalf of SWE-PPS, please contact Connie King at 633-4421 (office).

NEW!! Civil Engineering Day Saturday April 9th at the United States Air Force Academy Civil Engineering Department from 1pm to 4pm. This workshop will celebrate National Engineers Week, kids will be doing hands on activities like building FLINKERS (something that can't decide whether to FLoat or sINK.) and touring the Academy's Civil Engineering facilities. NEW!! The Cool Science Navy Cardboard Boat Building Contest. Picture it - a cardboard boat big enough to hold two people (kids or adults!) racing across a pool to win cool prizes! We'll have an (optional) orientation meeting Wednesday, May 4th where we'll take the kids through buoyancy concepts, make tiny mock aluminum boats and hand out a guide to building your very own cardboard boat. (Materials required - cardboard and packing tape) Then, Thursday, May 26th, we'll have the boat race in the downtown YMCA pool. Mark your calendars!
