Career Guidance - Share Your Knowledge of Engineering

Irving Middle School: Irving Middle School is asking for several more engineers to speak about their careers to students in the Project Lead The Way Gateway to Technology pre-engineering classes during Engineers Week. The engineering areas covered by the pre-engineering classes are electrical, mechanical, industrial, aerospace, computer and civil engineering.

The plan is for two engineers to speak each day from 1:00 pm - 3:40 pm during three 50-minute periods in the Irving Middle School Library on either Wednesday, February 23rd; Thursday, February 24th; or Friday, February 25th. (Each engineer can speak for 20 - 25 minutes per period.) There will be approximately 60 students present during each period. Students will be writing reports that week about each type of engineer, so they should have a little knowledge about each type of engineering.

The teachers and students at Irving Middle School are very excited about having engineers visit and present at their school and see their new Pre-engineering Program. This would be a wonderful opportunity for us to encourage middle school students to take the math and science classes in middle school and high school that are necessary for a student to successfully major in engineering in college!

Irving Middle School is located at 1702 N. Murray Blvd. in Colorado Springs (on the west side of Murray Blvd. south of Constitution Avenue).

If you would like to volunteer to speak to these students, please send Connie King (connieking at makhlaw.com):
-- your name;
-- telephone number;
-- engineering major;
-- a brief one-sentence description of your job; and
-- the date you would be available from 1:00 - 3:40 pm.

Thank you for your consideration!

  Note from the Editor

Engineers Week 2005 is February 20-26 and it's a chance to acknowledge the ingenuity and hard work that we as a profession have provided in the world. In fact, this year's tag line is "Engineers Make a World of Difference".

One way you can participate is by visiting the EWeek Web site at http://www.eweek.org and reading the various ways organizations are pledging to "Introduce a Girl to Engineering". Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day will be celebrated during EWeek on February 24th. If you're so inspired, you may even encourage your business to do something special on that day. There are many great ideas on the site.

Please visit their website for more information.

Leading Teams without Authority - a SWE Professional Development Web Seminar
On Feb 16, 2005 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST, join SWE and Caterpillar’s Gwenne Henricks for a one-hour session on leading successful teams.

Have you ever found yourself in charge of a project filled with co-workers from other departments, disciplines and possibly even other companies? This type of team exists everywhere – sometimes all in one location and sometimes scattered throughout the country or world. The numerous challenges involved in leading successful teams to project completion are greatly intensified when you have no direct authority over the team members. This SWE Professional Development Web Seminar will give you the tools and insight to lead a successful team and a successful project.

The Leading Teams without Authority Web seminar, sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, is free for all SWE members, but you must register for the event to get access information. For non-SWE members, we offer this valuable seminar for $49. Non-members who join SWE by February 28, 2005 will be entered into a drawing for a free National Conference Registration! To register, go to www.swe.org/webseminarreg. Registration ends at 5:00 pm EST February 14, 2005.
