A Letter from SWE-PPS President

Dear SWE-PPS:

Please join me in thanking our section vice-president Theresa Henderson for spearheading the effort to organize the Pikes Peak regional engineering social, held on October 21 st at the Warehouse. Section treasurer Connie King also helped organize the social as a representative for the Professional Engineers of Colorado (PEC).

The social was a joint effort with four other local engineering societies—American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), PEC and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). Representatives from each professional organization worked hard for two months ahead of time to organize this event, which drew over 90 engineers from a wide cross-section of the local engineering community—from students to retirees and engineers from the public and private sectors. Preferred organizations focused on math, science and engineering outreach to students were also present.

In addition to food and fun, this event also featured networking opportunities and the chance to tour the microbrewery in the Warehouse. SWE officers from the Rocky Mountain section—Jennifer Halstead and Tracey Whaley—attended to promote the Order of the Engineer (http://www.order-of-the-engineer.org) ceremony, which will be administered in conjunction with the E-Week dinner in February. If didn't attend the social, please plan on coming next year so you don't miss out on the fun!

On Tuesday, November 9 th , we have a joint meeting with the student section at UCCS. The topic will be “Making a Good Impression at Your First Job”. Please come to support our local student section and provide them with valuable insight. The stories your fellow SWE members share will be funny and educational! In December, SWE-PPS is looking forward to our annual holiday social at the Stagecoach Inn on Wednesday, December 15 th . I hope to see you at both these events!

  Note from the Editor

The 2004 National Conference, "Engineers Leading Change", in Milwaukee was well worth attending. As a small business owner in a company just starting its second year, I keep a watchful eye on the bottom line. This year's Conference met my expectations in terms of technical and professional education gained, marketing myself, and making contacts.

A little harder to measure, but equally as valuable, are the "softer" outcomes of attending the National Conference. Things like reconnecting with old friends, increased confidence as a business owner, gaining insights during conversations with other professionals, and being inspired by the talent and numbers in attendance and those presenting.

Please be sure to congratulate the UCCS Student Section on a job well done. They were recognized at the Conference with an award for their efforts in hosting the Region i Conference this year.
